A Pay Raise for Hawaii Budget Director Young?

Updated 1:45 p.m.

Looks like state Budget and Finance Director Kalbert Young could be in for a pay raise.

The Senate Ways and Means committee will take up SB 2963 on Wednesday, which:

“Requires the salary of the director of finance to be the same as the salary for the attorney general or administrative director of the state, whichever is greater.”

Young currently earns a salary of $108,972, while Attorney General David Louie makes $114,420, according to Civil Beat’s 2012 database of state government salaries. There is no “administrative director” title currently in the database.

The increase would represent a 5 percent raise, and would take effect immediately.

Updated: But, Young submitted testimony opposing the move, saying: “This measure would essentially increase the salary of the finance director while the rest of the employees in the Department are currently reduced. This would be bad for morale within the Department as well as statewide.”
